Frequently Asked Questions
We understand when parents have a ton of questions about their child’s dental care, and we are always happy to answer them for you!

Below are some frequently asked questions that our team hears all the time. If there’s anything else you’d like to learn more about, feel free to ask our friendly front office team!

How often should I bring my child to the dentist?

Children should visit the dentist for routine visits just as often as adults do, so twice per year at least. This allows our team to remove any plaque buildup on their teeth and check for any potential issues.

At what age should a child brush their own teeth?

Most children are responsible enough to start brushing their own teeth when they start losing their baby teeth, which is around six years old. We recommend that parents always make sure that their elementary age children are brushing their teeth frequently enough and using proper technique.

Are baby teeth important?

Kids will lose all of their baby teeth eventually, but that doesn’t mean that they’re not important! Avoiding dental problems from a young age can only benefit your child in the future.

How should I care for my baby’s teeth?

For babies whose teeth have not begun to grow in yet, we recommend running a warm, wet washcloth across the gums after feedings to keep them clean. Once the first tooth grows in, use a soft bristle brush and a very small amount (think the size of a grain of rice) of child-safe toothpaste and gently clean each tooth.

Why should I take my child to a pediatric dentist?

Pediatric dentists attend a few additional years of school after they complete dental school to learn how to cater to the unique needs of babies, toddlers, children, and teens. This is beneficial for pediatric patients because they are receiving high-quality dental care from dental professionals that love working with children.

As a pediatric practice, Pleasanton Children’s Dentistry & Braces accepts and welcomes patients who are between the ages of zero and eighteen years old. If you would like to schedule an appointment for your child, please get in touch with our friendly front office team!
