Chipped, Cracked, or Knocked Out: A Pleasanton Parent’s Guide to Kids’ Dental Emergencies

Chipped, Cracked, or Knocked Out: A Pleasanton Parent’s Guide to Kids’ Dental Emergencies

Fall in Pleasanton means football under the Friday night lights, weekend tournaments, playground adventures, and plenty of running around. Active kids are happy kids, but all that energy can sometimes lead to bumps, falls, and dental injuries.

When your child hurts a tooth, it’s natural to feel panicked. Knowing what to do in the first few minutes can make a big difference in saving a tooth and easing your child’s pain. At Pleasanton Children’s Dentistry & Braces, our team offers emergency care and same-day emergency appointments for children. Our dentists include Dr. Gladys Carrasco, DDS, who completed her pediatric dentistry residency at Boston University; Dr. Joanna Ayala, DMD, a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry; and Dr. Jennifer Hole, DDS.

Here’s what parents should know about common dental emergencies and how to respond.

Common Dental Emergencies in Kids

Children can experience a variety of dental injuries and urgent problems, including:

  • Chipped or Broken Teeth: Often caused by falls, sports, or biting hard objects.
  • Knocked-Out Teeth: A tooth that is completely forced out of the mouth.
  • Loosened or Displaced Teeth: Teeth pushed out of position by an injury.
  • Severe Toothaches: Often a sign of infection or deep decay.
  • Swelling: Swelling in the gums or face can signal an abscess.
  • Injuries to the Lips, Tongue, or Cheeks: Cuts or bites to soft tissue.
  • Broken Braces or Wires: Orthodontic issues that cause pain or injury.

What to Do: Step-by-Step Guides

If a Baby Tooth Is Knocked Out

  1. Stay Calm and Comfort Your Child: Reassurance helps kids stay calm.
  2. Apply Gentle Pressure: Use clean gauze to control bleeding.
  3. Don’t Put It Back: Baby teeth should not be reinserted, as this can damage the permanent tooth underneath.
  4. Call Our Office: We’ll check for other injuries and discuss next steps.

If a Permanent Tooth Is Knocked Out

  1. Find the Tooth: Pick it up by the crown, the part you normally see, and avoid touching the root.
  2. Rinse Gently if Dirty: Use milk or water briefly. Don’t scrub the tooth.
  3. Try to Reinsert It: If possible, gently place it back in the socket and have your child bite down on clean gauze.
  4. Keep It Moist: If you can’t reinsert it, place the tooth in milk or your child’s saliva.
  5. Get Care Right Away: Time matters. The sooner a dentist sees your child, the better the chance of saving the tooth.

If a Tooth Is Chipped or Broken

  1. Rinse the Mouth: Use warm water to clean the area.
  2. Apply a Cold Compress: Reduce swelling with a cold pack on the outside of the face.
  3. Save the Pieces: Bring any broken fragments to your appointment.
  4. Call Our Office: We can evaluate the damage and recommend treatment.

If Your Child Has a Toothache

Rinse with warm water, gently floss to remove any trapped food, and apply a cold compress if there’s swelling. Avoid placing aspirin on the gums. Call our office to schedule an evaluation.

When to Go to the Emergency Room

Some injuries need immediate medical attention. Go to the emergency room or call 911 if your child has:

  • A Head Injury: Especially with loss of consciousness, vomiting, confusion, or drowsiness.
  • Severe Bleeding: That won’t stop with pressure.
  • Difficulty Breathing or Swallowing: Particularly with swelling.
  • A Possible Jaw Fracture: Severe pain or inability to close the mouth.

Once your child is stable, our team can provide follow-up dental care.

How We Help in an Emergency

At Pleasanton Children’s Dentistry & Braces, our team is experienced in caring for children during stressful moments. Depending on the injury, treatment may include:

  • Dental Fillings: To repair small chips or cavities.
  • Dental Crowns: To protect teeth with more significant damage.
  • Dental Extractions: When a tooth can’t be saved.
  • Space Maintainers: To hold space if a baby tooth is lost early.
  • Pediatric Oral Surgery: For more complex injuries.
  • Sedation Dentistry: To help anxious children stay calm during treatment.

What to Keep in Your Emergency Kit

Being prepared can help you respond quickly when an injury happens. Consider keeping a small dental emergency kit at home, in the car, or in your sports bag:

  • Clean Gauze: To control bleeding.
  • A Small Container With a Lid: For carrying a knocked-out tooth in milk.
  • Cold Packs: To reduce swelling.
  • Orthodontic Wax: For children with braces.
  • Our Office Phone Number: Saved in your phone for quick access.

Preventing Dental Injuries

You can’t prevent every accident, but you can lower your child’s risk:

  • Wear a Mouthguard: Custom mouthguards protect teeth during sports.
  • Childproof Your Home: Reduce trip hazards for toddlers.
  • Use Car Seats and Seat Belts: Proper restraints help prevent facial injuries.
  • Avoid Chewing Hard Objects: Discourage chewing on ice, pens, or hard candy.
  • Keep Regular Checkups: Treating cavities early helps prevent painful emergencies.
